Truly Timeless, Classic &Magnificent
As soon as I first laid my eyes on the richly gilded arch and the brilliant use of calligraphy to fashion forms like domes, minarets, lamps etc. I knew I was in presence of a creation by some of the gifted artisans of the time.
he words definitely come to you mind as soon as you see the intricately designed Mihrab of Jama Masjid. It stands in a dazzling contrast to the stark white arched walls spread around. It is the first and the largest mosque constructed in Bijapur, Karnataka. It was built during the reign of Adil Shah I. It is known for the inscriptions on the western wall of the Central Mihrab which were completed in 1676 by Malik Yakut.
As soon as I first laid my eyes on the richly gilded arch and the brilliant use of calligraphy to fashion forms like domes, minarets, lamps etc. I knew I was in presence of a creation by some of the gifted artisans of the time. Completely enchanted I couldn’t tear my gaze away from the verses of Quran that were skillfully crafted into pieces of art. Calligraphy is used effectively used in various sizes to create memorable designs and compositions. To see the art form so skillfully used is an indescribable experience; it is necessary to take in the entire Mihrab personally to appreciate the effect it has on you. Bold compositions, delicate lettering in 3-layers, the relief calligraphy in the adjacent with a blue background, calligraphy on the dark background; all are a testament to the skill and mastery of the artists.
India’s most decorated Mihrab

This is one of India’s most decorated Mihrab. Islamic calligraphy is known for some stellar creations and we can often see the use of gold, especially in decorative calligraphy. What pleases me the most is how well preserved the structure is even today. Time has been kind to it and even some faded sections impart a certain lovable rustic look to it.
